12 SCROLL IS GONE

At bedtime Gram would cuddle me on her lap; pull out a parchment scroll wrapped in leather and trace the names of our family tree, all way back to Godiva’s mother. It’s been passed down mother to daughter for almost a thousand years.

When I was back this last time, I looked for that scroll and could not find it. That’s part of the reason I was on the Ancestry website. The names don’t match up. Every genealogy on every website is based on a son Aelfgar. I don’t ever remember seeing Aelfgar’s name on that scroll! Very mysterious.

Mom has no idea where to look, and my grandmother has dementia. Next time I’m in Coventry I will visit her at the Senior Center and hope for a glimmer of clarity. In the meantime, we can’t find the deed either. Maybe this is Brigadoon. I found many interesting bits in the files, but not household stuff. I don’t want to ask too many questions. What if the land belongs to someone else. Best to say nothing right now.

I’m in New York now, Mom has power of attorney, but she is getting older and has no means for upkeep. So, she is giving power of attorney and signed it all over to me in a letter written by a solicitor. I’m kinda, sort of the inheritor of “Eponia.” Perhaps it will allow me to explore and discover more.

I’ll tell you what, let’s join forces and share any information. I just ask that for now we keep this between you and me.
